I’m reading a book just published by Selina O’Grady, called “And Man Created God.” It’s not actually an atheist tract as that title would suggest. It’s sort of about the state of the world, and the various societies and cults and gods and messiahs which were all around at the time that Jesus was doing his thing. It’s a kind of a state of belief. And I’ve been reading “Cousin Bette”—Balzac. I mean, it’s enough to be reading the old stuff! What I’ve yet to read is Rose Tremain’s new novel, “Merivel,” which everyone tells me is fantastic.
